Hans Martin Krämer is a professor of Japanese Studies at Heidelberg University. He studied History, Japanese Studies, and Philosophy in Düsseldorf, Bochum, Tokyo, Harvard, and Kyoto. He earned his postdoctoral qualification with his habilitation thesis on the emergence of the modern concept of religion in Japan. His research focuses on the history of religion, the history of knowledge, and the social and environmental history of Japan.
