affiliated researcher Dr. Victòria Burguera-Puigserver
Dr Victòria Burguera-Puigserver is a historian specialising in the maritime history of the medieval Western Mediterranean, particularly that of the Crown of Aragon. Her research focuses on maritime predation and naval warfare, examining how these factors influenced Christian-Islamic relations during the late Middle Ages. A key focus of her work is the history of captivity, as well as the systems of negotiation, exchange and resistance that developed around it. In her doctoral thesis, The Sea Dangers: Piracy, Captivity, and Maritime Conflict Management in the Crown of Aragon (1410–1458), completed at the University of Barcelona in 2020, Dr Burguera-Puigserver reconstructs the origins of the connections between different management authorities and maritime warfare. She also analyses the function and composition of the royal and city fleets, and examines privateering wars and their objectives, as well as captivity resulting from piracy.
