Principle investigator Prof. Dr. Nikolas Jaspert
Nikolas Jaspert has spent two decades conducting historical research on warfare between polities, groups, and individuals in the Middle Ages. His research on the Crusades and most recently on the so-called “Reconquista” reinterprets conflicts between Christians and Muslims as transcultural phenomena marked by high degrees of entanglement and mythmaking, while studies on maritime violence challenge simplistic notions of “piracy.” Jaspert’s research and teaching focuses on the Mediterranean as an area of endemic conflict and constant exchange.
