Dr Anastassiya Schacht is a historian whose research focuses on the political history and transformations of statehood in East-Central Europe, the history of science and medicine under state socialism, and 20th-century international intellectual networks and cooperation. Postcolonial studies also inform her work, particularly in relation to the former Russian Empire. She earned her PhD from the University of Vienna, where her dissertation won an award from the Vienna Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies. For her doctoral project, she investigated strategies of self-construction and legitimisation within Soviet and international psychiatry from the 1970s to the 1990s, paying particular attention to the political abuse of psychiatry in the USSR.
